Sharing what I studied this morning:

Read Psalm 68

(Focus on verses 5-6,19-20,24-28,33-35)

(This is a lengthy song of exaltation, but we will focus on just these verses.) What are some reasons David exalts God in song?

This psalm was written by David and is believed to be written when he brought the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem. The headings in different Bible translations vary. I don’t know how translators determine the headings, but I imagine that there is a committee who studies and debates what the headings should be, then insert them in the text. HCSB’s heading is “God’s Majestic Power.”  The heading in the New King James Version is “The Glory of God in His Goodness to Israel.” The English Standard Version says, “God Shall Scatter His Enemies.” The heading in my Amplified Bible is “The God of Sinai and of the Sanctuary.” These headings were added by men and are not to be considered God-breathed, but they do give us an idea of how different people see different things in scripture. God’s power, His Glory, His Goodness, His defeat of His enemies all were pretty evident to me but the heading that puzzled me was from the Amplified Bible. God of Sinai and the Sanctuary. I had to look at those a little more closely. Sinai is where the law was given. The sanctuary, which is now us as believers who have God’s indwelling Spirit, is where God dwells. Verse 8 says, “…before God, the God of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel.” God gave Abraham, Issac, and Jacob (Israel) the promise that all nations would be blessed through them, and the Law that pointed out our need for a Savior. Israel means “God prevails.” He spoke to Moses from the burning bush and said His Name is I AM. (Exodus 3:14) Every other reason we have to honor God is based on these concepts. We honor Him in song because of Who He IS. Look at the verses we just read to see how David’s song of exaltation honors the whole character of  God. He is Holy. His dwelling is Holy. He is the Father to the fatherless and the champion of widows. He provides homes for those who are deserted. He leads prisoners out to prosperity. Day by day he bears our burdens. He is our Salvation. He gives us an escape from death. He acts in His strength on our behalf. All kingdoms of the earth sing to Him. He is Majesty. He has control over all creation. He is awe-inspiring in His sanctuaries. He gives power and strength to His people. Breathe that in. How does this apply to us? Why would we want to honor and exalt Him in song? Holy God became our Father (Galatians 4:5, Ephesians 1:5) through the salvation He provided for us by Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection. (1 Thessalonians 5:9-10) We were widows but now we are the Bride of Christ. (Revelation 22:17) We were prisoners to sin, (Romans 6:17-18) but He freed us to serve Him. In His Holiness, He comes to be in us.  Because Holy God lives in us, (Romans 8:9-11) we are His sanctuary (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). He bears our burdens (1 Peter 5:7, Matthew 11:28-30) He strengthens us (Ephesians 3:19) He is awe-inspiring in us. We live in temporary housing, but Jesus has prepared a permanent home for us. (John 14:2-3) All nations sing His praise (Galatians 3:6-9). And so much more. Does this feel overwhelming to you? It does to me. We have more than enough reason to exalt and honor Him with our songs.
